I ran across the expression "Bush's 'war room'" in the paper this morning. It refers to the electoral campaign and not, as a naively plumed foreigner might suppose, to Iraq-attack strategies. It struck me then, right out attacked, how paradoxical the phrase would be in Polish--"pokój wojenny"--where the word "pokój" means both "room" and "peace."

Yet a "warring peace," or a "peaceful war," is what we're being offered.
